My professional journey has been winding. From a Teacher to playing basketball in Spain, from a Call Center to a Cafe, and from Tester to Agile Coach, I have worn many hats over the years. Being an Agile Practitioner, as with any position, has a unique set of challenges. Many times, you are required to motivate and engage people without any 'real' organizational authority. Patience, creativity, and a whole lot of dedication are all necessary components of an effective Agile Coach. I enjoy making the effort to improve those skills and cultivate new ones every day.

How I Went Through Basic Military Training with Basic Agile Principles

As a 33 year old I decided it was time to follow my life-long dream of serving my country as a member of the United States Air Force. I went to Basic Military Training (Boot Camp) thinking that I could use all of my Agile experience to make things easy...it was far from easy. However, I was able to incorporate Agile Principles along the way to help our diverse group of over 45 trainees succeed, and I learned some good lessons to take back to my Agile Teams as well. I am excited to share my experience with all of you.

Abstract:
When transitioning from Scrum to Kanban, or any new methodology, there can be a tendency to lose focus on what made you successful in the first place. At Capital One, teams are given the flexibility to operate as they see fit, using any Agile method necessary to improve the quality the product and the productivity of the teams. When one 20 year veteran and a rookie straight out of QA saw the potential benefits of having their teams go from Scrum to Kanban, they teamed up and got to work on transforming the teams. They took the training, they got the teams on board with the change, and everything seemed fine…. For a while. Across the teams, five negative patterns were identified that were affecting the teams in different ways. The two Agile enthusiasts persisted and came away with solutions for each. Even better, they figured out how to avoid these dysfunctions all together.

Puzzling Lego WIP Limits

People will be in one of two groups. The first group will only have a puzzle and lego set to put together, but they must switch what they are working on every 30 seconds. The second group will have three things to assemble, but they will work on it one-by-one Ideally there will be two or three groups with no WIP limits and two or three groups that have WIP limits. This creates a very competitive and lively environment for the activity and plenty of feedback for the discussion afterwards.
