As leaders, team members or facilitators, we all attend tons of formal and informal meetings every year –brainstorming sessions, kickoff meetings, feedback and retrospective sessions, status update reports, planning discussions, demos, and meetings without agenda.

Truthfully, during a few of those meetings I’ve become paralyzed –especially if I wasn’t in a facilitation mode. Have you ever found yourself frozen or simply speechless during one of your meetings? Or hesitant about how to start one of them?

Although it is normal to run out of words now and then, we still need to get and maintain people engaged, interested and excited. There is where a JOLT come into play! In those hard times, a short, yet powerful short activity can rescue us.

In this high-energy session, you will learn at least seven of them –from icebreakers to brainstormers, meeting openers, retrospective engines, and creativity boosters. It would be like a marathon of learning, making connections and having fun.


Outline/Structure of the Workshop/Game


Small pieces and individual jolts have been performed several times in work environments with different types of groups. The assembled activity is a new session.

If approved by the Conference, this new format will be presented at least twice at local meetups.

The pictures attached are just examples (using PowerPoint slides during this session might become a distraction for attendees).


1) BUILDING CONNECTIONS (speaker-attendees, attendees-topic) - 4 minutes

+ 1-min Talk: The “why” of jolts and games.

+ 2-min Exercise: Standup Survey (about psychologically safe environments).

+ 1-min Talk: Debrief (how to create safe environments for facilitators and participants).

2) WORKSHOP MECHANICS - 35 minutes (7 rounds)

+ 1-min Exercise: Volunteer selection.

+ 3-min Demonstration: Jolt mechanics, rules and example.

+ 1-min Debrief: Closing/Uses/Q&A.

3) FINAL SHARING - 6 minutes

+ 3-min Exercise: Someone from the audience shares a jolt.

Learning Outcome

- Gain a deeper understanding of the role of games to foster an Agile culture.

- Learn replicable examples of how to apply games in different scenarios.

- Obtain a curated list of low-cost jolts and games.

- Learn at least 5 new icebreakers, brainstormers, meeting openers, retrospective engines and/or creativity boosters.
