What coaching is really about? Is it a skill or is it a technique? Is it what you were born with or something you learn? Is it a framework or is it a mindset? Is everyone coachable? How can coaching help you with your leadership style? How can you embed a coaching conversation while leading people? Would you be able to lead, coach and motivate others at the same time?

If those are your questions, come and join me for this session. I won’t be lecturing you about coaching, but rather we will engage in an interactive session to define what coaching is for you. In this session, you will get your hands dirty with coaching, and get familiar with it. You will even be given the tools needed to elevate your coaching skill to the next levels if you want.

Coaching is not a skill or a tool, it is a mindset. It is great to have a coaching mindset, everyone agrees on that. However, It is not easy to learn or obtain. It needs dedication, right foundation, direction and practice to master. In the Your Inner Leader & Coaching! session, I am going to help you with the most important of all, the foundation of coaching. You will learn a very effective method to start coaching.

Coaches are not helping people with their situation in hand, but they help them to become a better one to address a challenge in hand. You can be a coach, it needs dedication and practice. Once coaching gets embedded in your leadership style, you can easily use it to lead people and motivate them.

The session is an interactive session. I am getting you through The Simple Coaching Model (http://simplecoachingmodel.com), in which you are going to practice coaching first hand. This model will help you to get your feet wet with coaching. The Simple Coaching Model will give you the foundation for having coaching conversation in a very simple way; one that you can practice it on and on. When you become mature in coaching, this model will give you the freedom to build on top of it. You can get to the next level of coaching by expanding your skills no matter what that might be, active listening, asking powerful questions, get deep into feelings, be comfortable being silent etc.


Outline/Structure of the Case Study

This is an interactive session. I will talk for 5 minutes (or maybe less) and then I ask all to stand up (to get the energy level up) find a partner (one that didn't say hi yet to) and get them through The Simple Coaching Model

Introduction & socialize
I am talking for 5 minutes, asking them for engagement, taking risk and touching on what coaching might be

Small Talk Phase
I ask them to talk with their pair on a topic that is common to all and get to know each other more (they can sit at this point onwards, no need to stand up for the rest of the session) depending on the energy of the group, I might ask them to pair up with another person and talk
I ask them to talk with their pair on what coaching means to them, then I do a debrief on what coaching is and what it means. We do this a group and come to a conclusion that coaching is different for everyone, but we have a general understanding of what good coaching is.

Discovery Phase
Pairs will be discovering what is on their coachee's mind, this is where they are actively practicing coaching. At the 7-minute mark, I will do a debrief with the group. I will ask them to dig deeper to make sure that they are coaching on the right issue.

It's About them
Pairs will be discovering the "it's About Them" phase of coaching conversation by asking each other more questions. We want at this phase to focus on the person and not on the situation. We don't want also to focus on the other person that is not there, but the coachee. At the 7 minute mark, I am going to do a debrief. After that, I am going to ask them to ask them the fundamental question to ask each other "what are you looking for?"

What's Next?
Pairs will be exploring the coaching conversation through the "What's next" phase. They will ask the coachee on what is the option they are going to pursue and what options are they leaving out. Again at the 10-minute mark, I am going to do a debrief. After that, I am going to ask them to focus the conversation based on the context, is there any help they might need that you can ask them to explore or is there any options they want to explore.

Reflect ** At this point, I am going to ask them to share what was most helpful for the coachee. This is an exercise for the coach to go through and learn for the next sessions or their career even.


The remaining time will be allocated as buffer or simply a Q/A session. I will ask them to reflect on their experience for a minute and make notes for themselves for future improvements in their coaching style.

Also, to present them with The Simple Coaching Model at the end and show them the fact that they somehow have gone through the coaching arc and the differences it has. Also, to talk about more of the coaching characteristics and what they have learned in this session. I will ask them to practice this model as it is not the ultimate destination but the start.

debriefs: When I am talking about debriefs, I might do a debrief with all the people there or do with the people on their table, depending on the activity and number of people.
questions: I am going to provide them with the questions to ask each other in each phase.

    • With a foundation to expand on your coaching skills when you master coaching model
